Airways Air Traffic Control Facility

About the Project

Leighs Construction delivered an IL4, full base isolated secure compound to house Airways New Zealand’s air traffic control staff, equipment and amenities.

The site was reconfigured to accommodate the new, two-storey facility and associated civil works and the project was delivered in multiple stages.

The building is the first to be designed to the new US standard of post-event operational resilience, and is expected to be the most seismically resilient building in New Zealand.

The base isolators, which provide up to one and a half metres movement, were tested at the testing facility in San Francisco to complete failure – equivalent to the largest seismic event ever recorded in an inhabited area. This will ensure continuity for the important role Airways has as New Zealand’s air navigation service provider.
