As part of the National Covid-19 response, Leighs, and an expert project team collaborated to deliver a fast-tracked urgent expansion of Christchurch Hospital for the CDHB. This project was delivered in a tight time frame, within a busy acute live hospital environment.

The ICU Pod 4 project consisted of the fit out of a 615m² shell space to create 12 additional beds for Christchurch Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), bringing the total to 48 beds. This was completed in an expedited 15-week construction programme, with the new ICU space handed over on 29 April 2022, rather than late August as estimated in the initial business case.

The team adopted a collaborative and proactive approach to the project, working alongside the design team to finalise the design. Due to this fast tracked nature, the ability to adapt and shift quickly was crucial to a smooth delivery.

Being based onsite, we were able to deal with any issues or changes efficiently and immediately, utilising different methods to solve problems in a unique environment.

This project won the National Health Category along with the Value Award for projects $3-10 million at the 2023 NZ Commercial Project Awards.
