About the Project

The new, flexible learning environment was designed to accommodate the diverse and differing needs of CMDHB and its partners.

Spread over three levels, Ko Awatea is made up of a range of functional areas, including shared and collaboration spaces, lecture theatres, an innovation centre and teaching spaces.

Because the spaces are reconfigurable and services are integrated, Ko Awatea has transformed the way healthcare learning and innovation is delivered.

Ko Awatea is located in the heart of the hospital campus, which required the Leighs team to work very closely with the client and hospital staff to ensure minimal disruption throughout the project’s 18-month life cycle.

Any activities that require a services shutdown were carried out after-hours, or at weekends. Noisy works were also notified and scheduled to ensure the least amount of disruption to staff and patients.

Whenever possible, electricity powered tools rather than high emission tools were used, to reduce the amount of CO2 and other fumes. Any disruption to the hospital’s utility services was coordinated in advance with the client’s facilities management team, with contingencies provided for fire alarms, security and critical equipment operations.
