About the Project

Delivering the Papakura Military Camp Kindy: A Kaupapa of Collaboration

In September 2025, Leighs Construction completed work on the early childcare centre at Papakura Military Camp (PMC). This project was delivered as a $240,000 contribution to the NZSAS Trust, reflecting Leighs’ commitment to supporting families connected to the Defence Force. The centre will support 55 children, giving service and base personnel the peace of mind of having their tamariki close by.

Our role included the installation of timber decking, stairs, ramps, handrails, cabinetry, internal timber walls, doors, windows, and roof framing between the buildings. We also repaired water-damaged cladding, completed gib lining, and ensured the final fit-out was delivered to a high standard.

Working within the secure Papakura Military Camp required careful planning, strict access controls, and close coordination with Defence Force personnel — demonstrating our ability to deliver high-quality work in highly restricted environments.

“The service men and women at Papakura Military Camp do vitally important work for New Zealand. We were delighted to assist with the Kindy project, knowing it will provide real benefit to their whānau.” - Anthony Leighs, Founder of Leighs Construction

The project brought together Leighs, other builders, painters, landscapers, and electricians from the Defence Force. Up to five Leighs carpenters worked on site at any one time, and the Leighs team extended their time to ensure the project was completed to the client’s expectations.

The Kindy will support families on base, reducing travel time and costs while keeping tamariki close to their whānau. The Trust and project supervisor recorded a short video thanking Leighs for the donation, craftsmanship, and support, highlighting the meaningful impact of this collaboration.

“We’ve really valued the opportunity to work with the NZSAS Trust and our project partners. It’s been a great example of how collaboration and shared pride in our work can deliver something special for the PMC community.” - Tony Emery, Leighs Operations Manager, North Island

The project exemplifies Leighs’ commitment to community-focused projects and demonstrates how teamwork, expertise, and shared purpose can deliver spaces that matter.
