Christchurch Hospital Acute Medical Assessment Unit (AMAU)
About the Project
This project for the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB), was on the ground floor of Christchurch Hospital, directly below 17 operating theatres.
Included in the works were four staff observation areas, allowing direct patient view, and two consultant rooms, which allow staff to assess patients directly referred by their family doctor, reducing pressure on ward beds and the Emergency Department.

Soon after framing works began, the fit-out design was changed to meet IL4 standards. As this was a recent concept for the New Zealand construction industry, it took some time for consultants to design and implement, and placed pressure on the completion date. A great effort from the build team resulted in some of the delay being mitigated, by accelerating the build, which was completed free of defects, at hand over.
The new AMAU is a 1500m², 36-bed unit. Three single isolation rooms, with ensuites and HEPA filtered capacity, are part of the unit. A large room in the centre allows clinical teams a space for patient handover.
With site access being located adjacent to the main hospital entry, work had to cease periodically when major operations were carried out, as they could not proceed with background noise and vibration.
