Mt Eden Corrections Facility - Building C

About the Project

This project for the Ministry of Corrections in Auckland was delivered in an operational facility.

Building C included construction of a seven-story, precast accommodation block, housing 245 additional remand prisoners and is located within the existing Southern boundary of the MECF site. The high-security building also includes programme rooms, multipurpose spaces, staff facilities, AVL facilities, visiting rooms and a satellite health facility.

The corrections environment demanded focused attention to detail and a considered selection of materials that would be guaranteed to withstand the tough and prolonged expected mistreatment. Bespoke solutions were required to ensure security requirements were met. Internal finishes had to be anti-tamper and every gap had to have a non-pick sealant applied to prevent concealment of contraband.

Building C contains 192 cells with 351 beds. There is a staff base on every second floor and a plant room on every other level. To maintain security and allow access for maintenance, a services walkway runs at each level around the exterior of the building; this is fully enclosed by a curtainwall rain screen.
