Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Centre
About the Project
Its highly-architectural design represents two halves of a shell, reinforced and held together at the hinge. Its rich, warm interior is undulating, representing the rippled sand in the nearby mudflats.
Nestled between the bottom of the Mt Pleasant hills and the estuary, the Mt Pleasant Community Centre pays homage to its surrounding marine environment.

Location
The two-storey building includes a large, full-height, multi-functional space for town hall meetings and indoor sports, a range of smaller, flexible-use spaces, offices, a community kitchen and café area, children’s play area and amenities.
The building is a focal point for the community and was described by Architecture NZ as being “clever beyond belief, highly technical and collaborative, based around (but not driven by) an integrated BIM model, and with architects, engineers and contractors all working together towards the common goal…and the end result is a stunning achievement.”
