The Gilgit Wing at Allevia Hospital

The Gilgit Wing was developed to provide additional inpatient capacity and modern clinical spaces that support improved patient flow across Allevia Hospital. The new wing includes single and multi-bed patient rooms with ensuites, dedicated treatment and observation areas, clinical support zones, staff workspaces, and facilities designed to streamline daily hospital operations. The layout promotes efficient movement for patients, staff, and equipment, while enhancing privacy, infection control, and overall comfort.

A key focus of the project was creating adaptable spaces that can support changing models of care and future service expansion. The Gilgit Wing strengthens the hospital’s ability to respond to increased demand and deliver high-quality care for its community.

The Gilgit Wing at Allevia Hospital

Delivering a major hospital expansion within an active campus required a highly collaborative and staged approach. Leighs carefully planned works to minimise noise, vibration, and access disruptions, ensuring critical services remained fully operational throughout construction.

Daily coordination with hospital operations teams enabled safe movement of patients, staff, and visitors while maintaining emergency routes and clinical schedules. Service shutdowns, tie-ins, and infrastructure work were completed with precision and clear communication to avoid operational impacts. This disciplined, patient-first approach ensured the hospital continued to function smoothly while the new wing took shape just metres away.

The Gilgit Wing at Allevia Hospital

The Gilgit Wing required the integration of hospital-grade mechanical, electrical, and medical gas systems, along with high-performance building services designed for reliability and infection control. Coordinating these systems within a compact footprint demanded detailed planning and strong collaboration between designers, engineers, and specialist subcontractors. The project also involved tying new infrastructure into existing hospital systems without interrupting critical operations.

Acoustic control, air quality, redundancy, and clinical functionality were key drivers in the design. High-quality finishes, durable materials, and patient-centered design elements combine to create a safe, calming environment that supports both clinical efficiency and wellbeing.

The Gilgit Wing at Allevia Hospital

The Gilgit Wing delivers a modern, future-focused addition to Allevia Hospital, giving clinicians the spaces they need to deliver safe, efficient, and compassionate care. By expanding capacity and improving the quality of inpatient environments, the wing supports better patient outcomes and enhances the overall hospital experience for families and whānau. Its flexible design allows Allevia to respond to changing population health needs and adopt new technologies over time.

The project demonstrates Leighs Construction’s capability in delivering complex health infrastructure in sensitive, high-demand environments, and represents a major investment in the wellbeing of the community the hospital serves.
