Building in Airport Environments

Delivering critical works without disrupting operations

Building in Live Aviation Environments

Aviation infrastructure projects operate within some of the most controlled and safety-critical environments in the country. Work must be carefully coordinated around flight schedules, passengers, and essential systems.

Leighs has experience delivering projects beyond the terminal, including apron works and facilities within active airport environments. We understand the need for precise planning, strict safety protocols, and close coordination with airport authorities and operators.

Working airside and landside

Airport projects demand specialist knowledge and disciplined execution. Our teams are experienced in navigating access controls, safety systems, and operational interfaces without disrupting airport activity.

We plan our work around:

  • Airside and apron environments

  • Working alongside live flight operations

  • Managing interfaces with airport authorities and tenants

  • High-safety and compliance-driven sites

Our approach prioritises safety, predictability, and continuity of service.

Airways Air Traffic Control Facility

Leighs delivered a fully base-isolated IL4 compound for Airways NZ, housing staff and equipment. Designed to the new US post-event resilience standard, it’s NZ’s most seismically resilient building, ensuring operational continuity.

Aviation

CIAL Gate 15

Working in an operational airport environment, including ‘airside’, required strict adherence to security (including scheduling works to ensure staff have clearance prior to entering restricted zones) and careful management of site activities.

Aviation

Mars Stand Redevelopment

Undertaken in an operational, security-critical environment. To reduce security risks and ensure foreign objects didn’t make their way airside, the units were constructed off-site and transported across the apron for installation.
