About the Project

Constructed in the centre of Christchurch’s CBD, Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery School was formed through the merger of Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti secondary school and Discovery One primary school.

Innovatively designed as an alternative learning environment, Ao Tawhiti spans over 2200m² with multiple stories and 5800m² of space to accommodate up to 800 students.

Its unique urban location, inspired a design based around maximum engagement with the city and its abundant facilities. Placing the student at the centre, the central atrium complete with American Oak linings and Ronstan Steel mesh, stairwell, social and eating spaces act as a heart to the environment, with surrounding offices providing ample space for learning and collaboration

The ground floor is configured for technology, science and music facilities, with the top floor housing a gymnasium for physical activity and open views to the Port hills.
