About the Project

Born from the need to breathe new life into the Christchurch CBD following the February earthquakes, this project won international acclaim for its innovation and excellence.

The vision was to urgently re-establish business activity and public interest in the central city’s heart through a safe, commercially viable, retail and hospitality precinct.

Leighs Construction was given the task of converting 123 shipping containers into a high quality retail development in only two months – half the construction time originally anticipated, due to the immovable completion date, and the delay of confirmation of project funding.

Despite two snowstorms, and a myriad of other challenges, Re:START was opened by Prime Minister John Key on time to a first day crowd of more than 10,000 people.

Related Projects

Les Mills Carpark

This project comprises a seven-level car park and retail precinct that connects Wellesley Street with Victoria Street, including an upgraded rooftop slab to allow for future gym activities.

Speights Brewery Tour

The project was carried out to an exceptionally tight programme, which necessitated the works being completed within a two-month period, to ensure the tour was open for the busy tourist season.

University of Canterbury UCSA

The 3,500m², two-storied purpose-built student association building provides facilities including a Performance Theatre, Function Centre, Social Spaces, UCSA office, and external entertainment areas, including an amphitheatre and outdoor kitchen.
