New East Wing Building - Taranaki Base Hospital

The New East Wing Building commenced with the enabling works including demolition of the hospital’s main entrance, excavation of 44,000m3 of soil, 320 screw piles and over 450 CFA piles. The building’s primary structural steel frame sits on 103 base isolators. The floors are composite concrete construction, and all internal walls are timber framed. The timber framed walls are all pre nailed, and were modelled using BIM to allow for services penetrations.

The use of BIM here also assisted with programme efficiency. The building features a unitised curtain façade
with aluminium and glazing elements, which posed a challenging installation due to the precision required from the large subcontractor team.

With NEWB linking in to the existing Acute Services Building structure, the team has carefully integrated all entrances, atrium spaces and canopies with the live building – all while maintaining an excellent relationship with our client and the hospital stakeholders.

Externally, all civil elements, landscaping and associated exterior works complete the project, with a key feature of the hospital being the installation of the rooftop helipad.

Comprised of a lightweight aluminium structure supported on steel trusses, the helipad arrived at the site flat packed, and was then expertly constructed by a specialist team over a period of eight weeks. The helipad is designed to accommodate the larger, more modern helicopters that are being used today.
